A Blind Date Leads to a Connection

Robin Roberts and Amber Laign’s love story began 18 years ago when a blind date arranged by mutual friends brought them together. Despite a year of failed first date attempts, destiny finally intervened.

“Two of our friends, my friend Alex, her friend Bert, finally said, ‘That’s it, you two are going to meet,'” Amber Laign recalled, the first time she laid eyes on Roberts. “I remember just walking up and she was so beautiful, and she took my breath away, and she still does.”

Robin Roberts recalled their initial meeting and how a simple gesture sparked their connection. “After a short while into our date, I gave my friend Bert a little kick under the table,” Roberts explained, recalling the beginning of their meeting. “And we asked if they would like to stay for dinner, and her friend couldn’t stay, but she did.”

At the time of their casual first meeting in 2005, Roberts had transferred from ESPN to the “Good Morning America” anchor desk, creating a unique opportunity for her and Amber Laign to see each other on a daily basis. Amber Laign, who was initially not interested in sports or watching “GMA”, began altering her daily route to pass through Times Square to catch a glimpse of Roberts.

“I’d cut through Times Square and Sam [Champion] would be doing the weather,” Amber Laign recalled. “And when Sam would do the weather, Robin would walk over to the windows and she’d wave and we would time it.” This simple conversation added a special spark to their budding romance.

Weathering Life’s Storms Together

Their love story faced its first major challenge in 2007 when Robin Roberts was diagnosed with breast cancer. Laign’s unwavering support during Roberts’ recovery strengthens their bond. Through subsequent health and personal obstacles, including the loss of family members and Robin Roberts’ battle with myelodysplastic syndrome, their relationship grew stronger.

Roberts explained, “We’re partners. We’ll do whatever we have to do.” “The illnesses we’ve gone through, and are going through, have only made us stronger and made us kinder to each other and better understanding of each other.”

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic brought new tests, but also a deepening connection as Roberts and Laign faced the challenges of quarantine together. Talks of their marriage, which had existed throughout their relationship, turned into reality during this period of togetherness.

A Unique Proposal Seals the Deal

The proposal that sealed their commitment was uniquely fitting for their story. In late 2022, while dining at a beloved Connecticut restaurant, they exchanged calamari rings, turning a casual moment into a heartfelt proposal.

Roberts fondly recalled, “We took calamari rings and we slapped them on each other’s fingers and we just proposed to each other.” “Looking back now, it was very appropriate for us not to get [the proposal] down on one knee and have one person doing it and the one who was going to propose. It was just us standing behind our little wall Mexican spots and throwing calamari rings at each other saying, ‘Let’s go. Let’s do this.'”
